Letter from Board President

Dear Friend of Patterson Park,

2002 was a great year for Patterson Park!
With help from hundreds of members and dedicated volunteers, the Friends organization was able to promote Patterson Park in many incredible ways. To recap…

  • Patterson Park’s newly renovated Pagoda captured Baltimore’s heart! Over 9,000 people visited the Pagoda during the season.
  • Hundreds of visitors of all ages enjoyed the Concerts on Pagoda Hill and learned about nature from our Audubon partner.
  • Mayor Martin O’Malley joined us in a walk-around-the-park to celebrate turning on the beautiful perimeter lighting.
  • The Great Halloween Lantern Parade dazzled and amazed hundreds with an incredible light show.

Dedicated Friends’ volunteers help make these events possible. They plant and maintain trees and flowers, edge sidewalks, bake goodies and serve punch at kids’ events, staff committees on park improvements, and raise funds.

Last summer, when a devastating storm toppled many of the park’s oldest trees, volunteers stepped up to assist with clean-up, a gesture that was recognized with gratitude by Baltimore City’s Forestry Division.

Since its incorporation in 1998, only five years ago, the Friends of Patterson Park has become well-known as a community supported organization making a difference in the park and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Last year generous Friends contributed more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time and over $23,000 to the organization. As a result, we have been fortunate to secure grants to restore the Marble Fountain, present exciting events and programs, build our organization, and continue our collaborative work with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.

When all is said and done, Patterson Park will always be the “Best Backyard in Baltimore.”
